ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OF THE WATER DELIVERY COMPANY
As a company we fully understand our obligations to ensure that we minimise the impact that our water, water coolers and service has on the environment around us and to positively influence the future within our local and in the wider community.
Since January 2008 we’ve been working within the framework of the Carbon Trust - www.carbontrust.co.uk - to work out the ‘carbon footprint’ for our entire business system. This has given us an understanding of the emissions involved in each step of our supply chain, and enables us to identify where we can make the biggest steps in reducing our emissions. It also means that we have committed to continue this process over the next two years and onwards. Key areas that we have identified are below -
Water Miles
There has been much written on the amount of miles products have to travel until they reach the end customer – the current record for water we know about is Fijian water sold in Chelsea restaurants. Our spring water is extracted and bottled by a family run business in Wiltshire and travels 99 miles to our warehouse. On average the water then travels 5 miles onto our average customer. This is a very low “mileage” in comparison to most in the bottled water and water cooler industry.
Internal operations
We have looked at all areas of our internal operations and have tried to maximise the paper and plastic recycling. Although London councils do not supply recycling options for business customers we now take these products directly to municipal facilities ourselves. We have converted eighty percent of our vehicles to LPG fuels, and we are working within the European directive for refrigerant recycling – WEEE - when our water coolers come to the end of their working life.
For our customers
While we can work to minimise the direct environmental impact we have we are fully aware that our operations and our products will always have some environmental footprint. We have therefore joined with a third party company who have assisted us in becoming a carbon neutral company. Any excess carbon footprint our operations and products cause will be offset by purchasing carbon credits in line with the Kyoto protocol. We hope to have relevant stickers on all our products by August 2009 - but in the short term we have made offset the carbon cost of our water and watercoolers since May 2008.
