As we love history, and of course all things water-related, we thought that we’d have a little look at the battle of Waterloo, and get all of our water cooler London customers thinking a little bit about water (sort of) and its influence in history. On June 18th 1815, forces of the French Empire, lead by the infamous Napoleon and his chum Michael Ney, came under attack from the Seventh Coalition, which included an army commanded by the Duke of Wellington. At the site of the battle (near Waterloo, Belgium), Napolean’s defeat, and therefore the end of his rule over the French, occurred. It was his return to power the same year that the battle that sparked the Seventh Coalition’s forming and thus the planned overthrow of their Emperor. It was an easy fight though, and it lasted three days; on the 18th June, however, Napoleon delayed the battle until the ground had had time to fry out following rain the day and night before. Now we bet you didn’t already know that…

In the last of our office water cooler-friendly fables series, lovingly penned by Aesop to help us avoid falling into tricky situations, we hear about the dog who simply wasn’t willing to accept what he had, and thus lost in whilst striving for something he thought would be even more satisfying; this, of course, turned out to be only an illusion. The greedy dog, with a piece of meat his mouth, passed by a river and saw his reflection in the water, which had been somewhat distorted in size. The pooch, thinking he could see another dog with a larger steak, dived into the river to fight him for the prize and thus eat a bigger fill, only to find his opponent was non-existent, and he lost what he had owned in the first place.

Following the roaring success of our water cooler fable recounted in last week’s blog, we thought we’d share another with you, to pass on around the office water cooler and impress all your workmates. This time round, we hear about the clever crow who, upon stumbling across a pitcher of water with a low water level and thus could not quite reach into to drink from, added stones to the water. The level rose and he could easily enjoy his refreshment. The moral/teaching in this particular fable, “necessity is the mother of invention”, certainly rings true with our office water cooler. With lots of thirsty employees, ours keeps them hydrated, their brains ticking over and smiles on their faces, all needed to run a successful business. It’s always lovely to be able to show off your extremely brilliant and knowledgeable self around the office water cooler, and what better to share with your work mates than water-related stories, such as those lovely fables penned by Aesop all those years ago. This week, the moral of the story is “Look before you leap”, something which the goat did not do. The crafty fox managed to get himself stuck in well. The goat, passing by, enquired whether the water was tasty, and received the reply that indeed, it was the best spring water that the fox had ever tasted. Super, thought he, and leapt in too. Once he’d done so, he quickly realised that they were now both stuck, at which point the fox suggested he climb over the goat to get out, and then help his new chum to safety. Super, thought the goat for the second time, let’s got on with it. Rather predictably, the sly fox clambered to freedom and left the goat down the well…
We can (almost) guarantee the office water cooler is not somewhere where  foxes, goats or even humans can get stuck. We still think we should follow the moral of the story, though.

As part of our work to keep this up, we’ve set up a webcam in our office, so you can see exactly what Dan is having for lunch, when Marlon is answering the phone to take a water order, and just how cheery our drivers are after delivering all morning (they really are very cheery indeed). So if you’re ever stuck for what to do in your lunch hour, and you’ve already read the weekly blog instalment, picked the boring bits out of your sandwich and beaten your previous online Sudoku time, then all you need to do is connect with us and look at all our smiling faces. As you may have guessed by now, we love water. And this is why we like to spend our weekends around Merton Abbey Mills, the delightful old water mill which now plays host to an abundance of stalls selling jewellery, clothes, furnishings and other home-made goods, all day on a Sunday. Not only this, but various music and theatre events are hosted at the mill which can be checked on the regularly updated website. It seems that more and more we find it hard to make time for those we love, with work and running households taking up the majority of our time. Particularly in this difficult period, during which many are still feeling the affects of the recession, the office becomes more of a first than a second home, with hours increasing and many willing to work for longer in order to retain their jobs.
We at water cooler Kensington feel that making time for heart-to-heart chats is as important as anything else for a number of reasons; taking time out to disassociate with work-life is extremely important for one’s own sense of well-being and balance, as is the feeling of being connected to and involved with the people around you. Here are some snaps we took of our water coolers being loaded out of the factory where they are produced, sealed in a container and sent on their way to these shores. We have high quality bottled water coolers in a variety of styles manufactured for us in China – the coolers are loaded into a container – 192 of them – which is sealed and sent on its way to us over land and then sea.

The coolers then reach us at our warehouse in London SW19 around 7-8 weeks later.

More than anything, or maybe about as much as we love gossiping around the office water cooler, we love our food. You name it, we probably enjoy it, and with our extensive sampling of lunching/dinner munching at restaurants in the capital, we thought we’d share some of our favourite with you. Maybe we’ll even see you in there at some point (we’ll be the ones drinking Princes Gate water):

Hare and Tortoise, Putney/Brunswick Square: Literally the yummiest sushi ever, and really reasonably priced. Excellent for speed and friendly service, too.

Gallipoli, Angel: Delicious Lebanese cuisine-we recommend getting lots of mezze plates and sharing them, to help relieve you of food envy.

Bertie and Boo, Balham: You can feel the love from halfway down the street. Infinitely comfy arm chairs and cute old-fashioned desks to furnish this little café make it a popular spot.

The Pepper Tree, Clapham: Wonderful Thai food, with a great sociable atmosphere. You’ll be sharing a table with strangers, but it’s all part of the fun! And the portions definitely fill you up.
